Celebrating Black History Month 2016 in Washington D.C. & Alexandria

Alexandria Black History Museum

Through weapons, photographs, historic city record books and other artifacts, this museum on Wythe street near the King Street and Braddock Road Metro stops explores what life was like for both free and enslaved African-Americans in Alexandria during the 18th and 19th centuries.

Frederick Douglass National Historic Site

Take a guided tour of the 21-room residence where Frederick Douglass lived from 1877 until his death in 1895. Douglass, who published several 19th-century newspapers and was an advisor to presidents Abraham Lincoln and Andrew Johnson, is considered one of the most important African-American pioneers of civil liberty. His home is located in D.C.’s Anacostia district on W Street.

Martin Luther King, Jr. Memorial

The newest monument on the National Mall depicts Dr. King at the edge of a block of granite, representing hope emerging from the darkness. It is located at 1964 Independence Ave SW in D.C. – the memorial’s address was chosen in honor of the Civil Rights Act of 1964.
Another exciting Black History Month event in D.C. was the announcement that the Smithsonian’s National Museum of African-American History and Culture will open on September 24, 2016.
To comfortably visit these and other important sites in African-American history, be sure to choose one of the hotels in Alexandria that has what you need. With great complimentary amenities like a breakfast bar, shuttle to the Huntington Metro station and 24-hour fitness center, the Holiday Inn Express & Suites Alexandria – Fort Belvoir is the perfect place to stay to celebrate Black History Month in 2016 in D.C.
