Mount Vernon was once the home of the United States’ first president, George Washington. Nestled alongside the Potomac River, this beautiful estate welcomes visitors to tour the historic property year-round. Here are a few of our favorite events happening at Mount Vernon this summer:
Mount Vernon Commemorates Purple Heart Day
On August 11, Mount Vernon is paying tribute to the Purple Heart with its annual National Purple Heart Day Ceremony on the East Lawn. Members of the Military Order of the Purple Heart will be present for the ceremony, along with General Washington, who will make remarks before the proceedings start at 10:30 AM. The cost of attending this event is included in general admission. Purple Heart recipients receive free admission to Mount Vernon.
George Washington's Distillery® and Gristmill
Take a tour of George Washington’s Distillery® and Gristmill, both of which are fully functioning today. The reconstructed distillery produces George Washington’s whiskey, which was a large source of income for Mount Vernon during the late 1700s. At the Gristmill, you’ll get to see incredibly large gears turning and stones grinding in a process that Washington once used to make flour and cornmeal. The tour is open until the end of October and is included with general admission
George Washington Patriot Run
Conclude your summer with these 5K and 10K runs on September 9 at Mount Vernon. The George Washington Patriot Run starts at 8 AM and runs along the beautiful George Washington Memorial Parkway. The course follows Washington’s footsteps through Mount Vernon with the finish line in view of the mansion. Register before September 2 for $50 or from September 3–9 for $60. This is a USATF-certified course.
