Cherry Blossom Viewing and Festivities for 2018 in Alexandria and D.C.

13 Mar

Peak bloom of the cherry blossom trees is defined as the time when the Yoshino cherry blossom trees are at 70% full bloom. It’s the sole natural event of the year in DC that inspires a month-long festival. The National Park Service has predicted peak bloom to come between March 17 to 20 while the Washington Post’s Capital Weather Gang has predicted March 23 to 27.

To keep in line with the peak bloom predicted by the NPS, the National Cherry Blossom Festival will begin on March 17 and run until April 15. Here are a few of our favorite festivities going on during cherry blossom season in Alexandria and DC:

The 7th Annual Blossom Kite Festival

On March 31 from 10 AM to 4:30 PM, the grounds of the Washington Monument will be taken over by amateur and professional kite makers and fliers alike to celebrate the Blossom Kite Festival. People from all over the world are expected for the kite makers’ competitions and demonstrations during this free festival. Highly anticipated events include the Hot Tricks Showdown and the Rokkaku Battle, which is an incredible exhibition by skilled kite fighters who use traditional six-sided Japanese fighter kites.

The 2018 Blossom Bash Presented by iHeartRadio

The inaugural Blossom Bash is one of the new events to join the National Cherry Blossom Festival this year. Headliners Third Eye Blind and Bush are bringing the best of alternative music to The Anthem on April 6, along with lovelytheband, an indie-pop group. Doors open at 5:30 PM and the show begins at 7 PM. Tickets start at $55.

The 2018 National Cherry Blossom Festival Parade

A grand spectacle not to be missed, the National Cherry Blossom Festival Parade is happening on April 14 and runs from 10 AM to 12 PM. There will be floats, marching bands, helium balloons, and performers a-plenty, with a few notable appearances to include country singer Ty Herndon, hip-hop group Arrested Development, and the extreme pogo stunt team called XPOGO. Don’t forgot the giant Peppa Pig, Magic School Bus, and more different balloons set to float along Constitution Avenue. The parade route between 9th and 15th streets along Constitution Avenue is open and free for the public. For an even better view, Grandstand Seating starts at $20.
