The long Labor Day weekend serves as a symbolic farewell to summer. Celebrations with family and friends on the waterfront, mornings at the local farmers market, and drinks on the rooftop are but a few of the events going on during Labor Day in the capital region this year. Here are a few of our favorite events going on in Alexandria and DC for Labor Day 2019:
Visit the home of George Washington during Labor Day weekend for a day full of incredible stories about the United States' first president. Take a tour of the fully-functioning distillery to see how they make George Washington's whiskey. On the Pioneer Farm, you can see many of the same breeds of pigs, sheep, and chickens that Washington once raised. For an educational day at Mount Vernon, tickets are $20 for adults and $12 for children. Discounts are available for military servicemembers and veterans.
Saturday morning in Old Town Alexandria is a traditional smorgasbord of local artists, farmers, and shoppers. You'll find fresh fruit and vegetables, pastries, meats, and cheeses from the local farmers. Artists offer handcrafted soaps, homemade jewelry, and more at their creative tables. The Old Town Farmers Market is every Saturday from 7 AM to 12 PM in Market Square in front of City Hall.
Depart from the Alexandria City Marina in Old Town for a guided sightseeing tour on the Potomac River. Enjoy your Labor Day cruise while viewing the John F. Kennedy Center, Arlington Memorial Bridge, and more from the water. Take a one-way, 45-minute tour up the river to Georgetown, or book a round-trip 90-minute tour for extra time on the water. Tickets start at $16 for one-way and $28 for roundtrip cruises.
