It’s important for people everywhere to do what they can to stay happy and healthy. One of the best ways to accomplish this goal is running, an easy exercise that improves heart health, relieves stress, and prevents disease. If you’re a runner or interested in learning about running, the Alexandria Running Festival and 5K sponsored by the Marathon Charity Cooperation (MCC) takes place May 28 at the USPTO in the city’s Eisenhower District.
Alexandria Half Marathon & 5K Course
Last year’s event featured over 1,200 runners participating in the half marathon, half marathon relay, and 5K races. This year’s scenic track is mostly flat and shaded, taking runners down Eisenhower Avenue and through three local parks including Cameron Run and Hensley Park. The half-marathon begins at 7:30 AM, the 5K starts at 8 AM, and the kids’ fun run begins at 7:45 AM. Participants will receive a free shirt, goodie bag, and more. For more information about the course and an exact schedule of events, check out the festival’s official website.
College of Running Expo at the USPTO
There’s more than just a series of exciting races going on at this year’s festival. From 1:00 PM til 5:00 PM on the Saturday before the race, a series of educational events known as the College of Running will be held in the Lower Atrium of the USPTO building. Last year’s series included topics on hydration for runners, healthy running habits, and tips for designing a training program.
Alexandria Family Festival
While the races are happening, the MCC will also be hosting an Alexandria Family Festival to celebrate local families and honor those who serve in our nation’s military. The Family Festival takes place at the starting and ending point of the race, on Eisenhower Avenue between Elizabeth Lane and John Carlyle Street. Activities will include balloon artists and face painters. Planning on visiting Alexandria for the Running Festival or any other Memorial Day events? You’ll need a comfortable hotel for the family. At the Holiday Inn Express & Suites Alexandria – Fort Belvoir, you’ll find top-of-the-line amenities like a complimentary breakfast bar and free shuttle to the metro, a welcoming staff, and easy access to D.C.
