Congress declared the 4th of July to be an official holiday in 1870, leading to the annual celebrations with parades, patriotic renditions of our nation’s songs, and incredible fireworks displays that we see today. Here are a few of our favorite events happening for Independence Day in Alexandria and DC:

Live from the Nation's Capital: A Capitol Fourth

John Stamos is coming back to A Capitol Fourth to present the nation’s best concert and fireworks show on the West Lawn of the U.S. Capitol. A live audience numbering in the hundreds of thousands is expected for this free Independence Day celebration on Wednesday, July 4. Millions of people at home and our deployed troops who couldn’t be here for the holiday will get to watch the concert and fireworks display live. The concert begins at 8 PM and features incredible and well-known talent like Jimmy Buffet, Pentatonix, The Beach Boys, and many more.

Independence Day Fireworks Dinner Cruise

Depart from the Southwest Waterfront in Washington DC for the 4th of July Fireworks Dinner cruise. Board the Spirit of Washington starting at 6:30 PM on July 4 and set sail on the Potomac at 7:30. The cruise’s course will allow for amazing views of fireworks over the Potomac River. Games like giant Jenga and shuffleboard will be played on deck and there will be a DJ and dance floor. Dinner will be served buffet style with three courses. Tickets for the cruise start at $179.90.

Alexandria's 269th and the USA's 242nd Birthday Celebration

The joint birthday celebration for Alexandria and the USA is happening on Saturday, July 7 at Oronoco Bay Park, along the Potomac waterfront. The U.S. Navy Band Commodores will begin the night with a lively performance starting at 6 PM. Enjoy birthday cake at 8 and music by the Alexandria Symphony Orchestra at 8:30. The grand fireworks spectacle will start at 9:30, so be sure to have your lawn chairs and blankets set up by then. View the online brochure for more information.
