Memorial Day falls on Monday, May 28 this year. This is a special holiday to remember those in our military, and their families, who have made the ultimate sacrifice. Take the weekend to remember them by celebrating at special festivals, races, and parades. Here are a few of our favorite events going on for Memorial Day in Alexandria and DC:

The Memorial Day 2018 Alexandria Family Festival

On Sunday, May 27, celebrate military service members and families at the Alexandria Family Festival by participating in the races or cheering from the sidelines. The day will begin with a half-marathon that starts at the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office on Eisenhower Avenue at 7:30 AM. Following that is the Kid’s Kilometer at 7:45 AM and the 5K at 8 AM. There will be fun activities such as face painting and balloon twisting for children during the celebration. Medals will be presented to all half-marathon finishers.

41st Annual Memorial Day Jazz Festival

The Memorial Day Jazz Festival is being held on Monday, May 28 at Waterfront Park in Alexandria. Running from 1 PM to 6 PM, numerous jazz bands will be performing and there will be food and beverages for sale. The U.S. Navy Band Commodores will put on a big opening performance with a special Big Band sound. Lively bands to follow the opener include Project Natale, The Rick Whitehead Trio, and The Village Jazz Band featuring Dixieland Jazz. This is a free event to attend and, in the case of inclement weather, will move to the Lee Center Richard Kauffman Auditorium.

The American Veterans Center’s National Memorial Day Parade

Hundreds of thousands of people will flock to D.C. on Memorial Day to see the nation’s largest event honoring this holiday: the National Memorial Day Parade. Pay tribute to our fallen servicemen and women as the parade starts at 2 PM and runs along Constitution Avenue, bringing floats, marching bands, and more, telling stories of our nation’s military history. The parade lasts until 4 PM and is a free event to attend. Local news stations and YouTube will also broadcast the parade.
