Listen to the Music: Enjoying Summer 2018 Concerts in Alexandria & D.C.
We’re right in the middle of summer, and although many people enjoy the beach, barbecues, and long vacations, there’s another staple of the season that can’t be overlooked: summer concerts! Summer is one of the best times to catch a live band, whether you’re into traditional orchestra music or energetic rock ensembles.

Below are some of our favorite musical happenings in and around Alexandria this summer:

After Work Concert Series

On the second Friday of each month, the Folklore Society of Greater Washington and the Office of Historic Alexandria are sponsoring concerts at three different locations throughout Old Town. The next concert is Friday, August 10 from 6 to 8 PM at the Murray-Dick-Fawcett House – check out the Alexandria website for more information.

Jazz in the Garden

One of the D.C. area’s most popular musical events is returning for another summer of wonderful tunes! Each Friday beginning at 5 PM there will be a concert held in the Sculpture Garden at the National Gallery of Art on the National Mall. The emphasis is on jazz-style artists, but there is a big array of subgenres showcased in this series. You can also purchase sangria and snacks at the onsite Pavilion Café. The official Jazz in the Garden website has all the info you need.

The Birchmere

Originally opened in 1966, The Birchmere has stood the test of time as one of the region’s premiere venues for smaller, intimate musical performances. This dinner club in northern Alexandria just south of Crystal City hosts shows by some of the world’s best performers and has helped launch many careers. Notable shows this year include Keb Mo on August 25, The Jeff Daniels & Ben Daniels Band on August 18, and 1964: The Tribute on August 4. Visit the Birchmere website for more info.

Whether you’re coming in from out of town for a show or you simply want a relaxing night without worrying about getting back home, there’s no better place to stay for a summer concert than the Holiday Inn Express & Suites Alexandria – Fort Belvoir. With a free shuttle to the metro, convenient access to Old Town, and great amenities like complimentary breakfast and Wi-Fi, we’ll be your home away from home as you take in the summer tunes this year.
