The 257th Army Band, “The Band of the Nation’s Capital”, is coming to Alexandria for a FREE concert Sunday, August 2nd at 6:00 PM! The performance will feature “All Entertainment” – music from the stage, the screen and the ring! Bringing your own chair is recommended or you can sit on the bench seating surrounding the square. So, what exactly is the Army Band? Also known as “Pershing’s Own”, the United States Army Band is the premier musical organization of the United States Army. The Band was founded in 1922 by Army Chief of Staff General of the Armies John J. “Black Jack” to emulate European military bands he heard during World War I. The heritage of The 257th is honorable and includes performances such as Inaugural Music Support for the Inauguration of President Obama, burial of the Unknown Solider in 1921, musical support for the state funeral of Presidents Harding and Kennedy and overseas deployments to Greece and Panama. Annual trainings in 2003 and 2004 included unprecedented, consecutive performances at The Great American Brass Band Festival and community relations performances in the national capital region. Concert tours conducted from 2001 through 2013 include the north eastern and eastern regional states, central Texas, Jamaica (2012) and the US Virgin Islands (2013). Although centrally located among the finest military bands in the world, The 257th Army Band was officially recognized, upon request by CW3 Sheila Klotz, by the Center for Military History in 2004 as “The Band of the Nation’s Capital”.
