November 11 was originally the anniversary of the day that World War I ended. It’s now nationally celebrated as Veterans Day. This memorable holiday falls on a Saturday this year, leaving room for events to fill the weekend. Here are a few of our favorite happenings in and around Alexandria:
Gadsby’s Tavern Museum Tours on Veterans Day 2017
To honor the military service members lost in World War I, in 1929 the decrepit buildings that now house Gadsby’s Tavern Museum were bought and restored by American Legion Post #24. To commemorate the special bond between the museum and the American Legion, tours of the museum will be free for all guests on Veterans Day between 11 AM and 4 PM.
2017 Veterans Ball in Alexandria
Revel in English country dancing, live music, and a light dessert while honoring the late veterans of the Revolutionary War during the Veterans Ball starting at 8 PM in Gadsby’s Tavern Museum. Tickets are $45 and attire may be cocktail dress or military or civilian 1780s period appropriate. At least one dancing lesson is recommended for those who are not familiar with 18th century English country dancing. Luckily, dance classes are being held at Gadsby’s Tavern Museum on October 26, November 2, and November 9 at 7:30 PM and are $12 per class or $30 for all three.
2017 Women Veterans Leadership and Diversity Conference
From November 10 to 12, the Women Veterans Interactive is hosting the only conference dedicated to women veterans from all United States military branches at the Georgetown University Hotel and Conference Center in Washington D.C. This conference is dedicated to supporting female veterans in their transition to civilian life by reinforcing the leadership skills they learned in the military. Network and attend leadership workshops all weekend. The Jocks and Pearls Awards Gala, a black-tie-event, is being held Saturday night at 8 PM. Along with inspiring keynote speakers and a Veterans Day tribute, this 3-day conference will be an important event to attend for female veterans looking to make an impact in the world.
