Be part of something bigger for Earth Day 2018 by volunteering your time to help clean-up water ways and educate others on the importance of recycling. You can also recognize the holiday by participating in a tree-planting event and supporting local businesses who are environmentally conscientious. Here are a few of our favorite events going on for Earth Day in Alexandria and DC:

The 2018 Cleanup at Four Mile Run Park

This annual clean-up is hosted by the City of Alexandria and is part of the Potomac River Watershed Cleanup. It is happening on April 14 from 9 AM to 11 AM at the end of Commonwealth Avenue in Four Mile Run Park. Volunteers are being strongly advised to wear closed-toe shoes or boots for safe navigation along the water channel’s edge and hats and sunscreen if needed. RSVP to volunteer for this cleanup event.

Earth Optimism Day 2018 at the Smithsonian’s National Zoo

The Smithsonian’s National Zoo is commemorating Earth Day on Saturday, April 21 with Earth Optimism Day. From 10 AM to 2 PM, hear stories from experienced zoo-keepers and get hands-on educational opportunities to learn about animals being saved through conservation. Also discover how coffee can be part of a sustainable way to help protect migratory birds at this free event.

Alexandria Earth Day 2018

On Saturday, April 28, the Alexandria Earth Day celebration will be broadcasting live with the theme, “Local Action, Global Impact.” This fun and educational event is happening from 10 AM to 2 PM at the Lenny Harris Memorial Fields at Braddock Park. There will be activities and games for kids, information on recycling, and even a bike valet to encourage clean transportation.

Several opportunities for local Scouts and kids to earn the Alexandria Earth Day badge are available and include:

· Participating in the 2018 Trashin’ Fashion Show at Alexandria Earth Day to showcase an outfit made from recyclable material.
· Volunteering to help at the composting station at a farmer’s market
· Attending the Cleanup at Four Mile Run Park
