Imagine this: it’s New Year’s Day, on a cool, crisp morning and you’re pulling up to Nationals Park in Southeast Washington D.C. to watch… hockey? Yes, hockey, believe it! The 2015 Bridgestone NHL Winter Classic is set to descend upon D.C. where the Washington Capitals will take on the Chicago Blackhawks in the home of Major League Baseball’s Washington Nationals on January 1st at 1 PM.
In what will be the sixth installment of the now iconic #WinterClassic, the matchup itself is an intriguing one. The potent, star-studded Blackhawks are the 2010 and 2013 NHL Champions and feature some of the game’s brightest stars in forwards Patrick Kane, Jonathan Toews, and defenseman Brent Seabrook. The Captials, firmly in the playoff mix in the NHL’s Eastern Conference, also boast one of the league’s best in 3-time league-MVP Alexander Ovechkin. The two titans of the game will go head-to-head in what will be the second appearance for both squads in a Winter Classic.
Nationals Park, which will be hosting the spectacle on New Year’s Day for the first time, joins a list of impressive venues that have previously hosted the event including Chicago’s Wrigley Field, Boston’s Fenway Park, and Philadelphia’s Citizens Bank Park.
