Oktoberfest 2019: Volksfest Celebrations in Alexandria and DC

Germany's largest volksfest (people's festival) is the annual Oktoberfest in Munich, Germany. This two-hundred-year-old festival is the inspiration for the many Oktoberfest celebrations found in cities all over the United States and around the world. Here are a few of our favorite Oktoberfest celebrations happening in Alexandria and DC this year:

Wunder Garten's 5th Annual Oktoberfest in Washington DC

Celebrate Bavarian culture at Wunder Garten's 5th Annual Oktoberfest, starting with the official tapping of the keg at 5 PM on Friday, September 27. Wunder Garten's Oktoberfest spans two weekends, September 27 to 29 and October 4 to 6. Enjoy live music, games, authentic German food, and more in DC's very own beer garden. This event is free to attend.

The 23rd Annual Oktoberfest at Fort Belvoir

Enjoy German beer, a 5K/10K Volksmarch, carnival rides, and more at the Fort Belvoir Oktoberfest happening from October 3 to 6. There will also be live music, fun steins available for purchase, and plenty of family-friendly activities. This special Oktoberfest is the one event every year when Fort Belvoir welcomes the general public onto the army base. Visit Fort Belvoir's event page to learn more about attending Oktoberfest this year. Entry to Fremont Field is free, and prices for carnival ride wristbands start at $20.

The 2019 Dogtoberfest at Port City in Alexandria

Port City Brewing Company is hosting its first ever Dogtoberfest on October 19 from 12 PM to 8 PM in the parking lot outside the brewery. There will be an agility course, dog trivia, and an adorable bulldog kissing booth. Food options for dogs include the Woofbowl food truck, while Pizzeria Paradiso and The Frenchman Food Truck will have treats for the human crowd. Get a head start on your pet-centric holiday photos, as Santa will be making an appearance! Humans are welcome with well-behaved, leashed dogs at this free event.
