Presidential Hot Spots in Alexandria
Being so near to Washington, DC, it’s no surprise that several United States presidents have been spotted on Alexandria’s historic streets. Since its days as George Washington’s hometown, Alexandria has seen the likes of Ronald Reagan and Barack Obama stealing evenings away from the hustle and bustle of the nation’s capital. So if you’re in search of something POTUS-approved, we recommend these Presidential hot spots!
Restaurant Eve: President Obama and First Lady Michelle celebrated their anniversary here in 2011 in the restaurant’s “Sunflower Room.”
Dairy Godmother: Barack Obama and his daughters Sasha and Malia stopped into this Del Ray custard shop for a Father’s Day treat in 2009, even bringing home some doggy goodies for the family pup, Bo.
The Majestic: Enjoy selections from the First Family’s menu for Michelle’s mother’s birthday, including a classic Caesar salad, fried oysters, fried green tomatoes, and the Majestic’s signature meatloaf.
Union Street Public House: Sample trout and gumbo at this eatery frequently visited by Michelle and Malia Obama.
Vermilion: President Obama and First Lady Michelle celebrated a romantic Valentine’s Day dinner at this cozy restaurant in 2012.
FireFlies: After receiving an invite to try the “best burger in town” from the owner, President Obama stopped by for lunch with his secretary of education, Arne Duncan.
Jackson 20: Laura Bush dined here during her husband’s presidency. This tavern was named for President Andrew Jackson and his picture on the $20 bill.
Gadsby’s Tavern Restaurant: Perhaps the original presidential hotspot, Gadsby’s Tavern played host to the first five American presidents. It was George Washington’s favorite stopping place between Old Town and his estate at Mount Vernon, and the location for Thomas Jefferson’s Inaugural Banquet.
Mount Vernon Inn Restaurant: Adjacent to George Washington’s Mount Vernon Estate, Museum, and Gardens.
