If anyone knows how to pull off the best Independence Day celebrations, it's our nation's capital and surrounding area. Fireworks over the Potomac, cannon fire, and heart-stopping musical performances are all part of the salute to our nation's history. Here are a few exciting events going on around Alexandria and DC for the 4th of July:
On Thursday, July 4, 2019, PBS will be broadcasting A Capitol Fourth live from the West Lawn of the U.S. Capitol from 8 PM to 9:30 PM EDT. Among the confirmed performers for this year's event is Maestro Jack Everly, who is the music director and will be leading the National Symphony Orchestra. Stay tuned to PBS's website for further announcements of this year's artists. Hundreds of thousands of people will be in attendance for the spectacular fireworks show and fantastic musical entertainment.
Incredible daytime fireworks displays and intermittent cannon fire will be taking place throughout the day on July 4 at Mount Vernon. Along with a full day of military re-enactments and a wreathlaying ceremony, An American Display is a dazzling way to spend your July 4. The grounds of Mount Vernon will be open for this event from 8 AM to 5 PM. Tickets are $20 for adults, $12 for children ages 6 to 11, and free for children 5 and under.
Celebrations of the United States of America's 243rd birthday and Alexandria's 270th birthday are happening this year on the Potomac waterfront. Pack a picnic to come listen to the Alexandria Symphony Orchestra, but leave room for the patriotic birthday cake and food vendors that will be in attendance. This free event happens Saturday, July 13 from 7 PM to 10 PM. A fireworks show will be included for enjoyment from your lawn chairs and blankets at Oronoco Bay.
