Summer is a season for travel, and D.C. is among the most popular destinations for tourism in the United States. Boasting mild weather including nice springs and summers, lots of history and culture, plus some of the best restaurants in the United States, there are plenty of things to do in the region.

If you’re interested in taking a trip to D.C. itself or a popular suburb city like Alexandria, here are five things to keep in mind as you start planning:

1. Stay near the metro

D.C. has one of the top public transit systems in the country. As long as your hotel is in close proximity to one of the area’s metro lines, you’ll be able to access many different places with relative ease. The green, blue, orange, and yellow lines will get you almost anywhere you need to go.

2. Pick a few priorities

There are 11 different Smithsonian museums on the National Mall, plus close to ten monuments, popular private museums, and some of the top restaurants on the eastern Seaboard. And that’s just D.C. itself! You won’t be able to do everything, so narrow it down to the top two or three things you want to do and make sure to spend plenty of time there.

3. Consider a guided package

If you don’t want to take the time to plan, or you simply want to see a curated list of some of the best parts of the city, think about purchasing a guided tour package. You can also follow a self-guided tour – check out this list of walking tours in Alexandria for a good place to start.

4. Pick a hotel that makes your stay easier

The last thing you want to worry about on a trip to D.C. is whether or not your hotel meets your needs. Choose accommodations that are competitively-priced, comfortable, and located in close proximity to all the fun of the region.

With a free shuttle to the metro, complimentary hot breakfast bar, and easy access to both Old Town Alexandria and D.C. itself, there is no better place to stay in the area than the Holiday Inn Express & Suites Alexandria – Fort Belvoir.
